COMMUNITY BASED DOULA

Pregnant and wondering if a Doula is right for you? Doula Scope of Practice:

What Is a Doula?

A doula is a trained, non-medical birth support professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and educational support before, during, and after childbirth.

How Doulas Support Families

  • Provide compassionate, family-centered care tailored to the needs of the birthing person.
  • Help create an individualized birth plan that complements medical care.
  • Offer emotional support through reassurance, active listening, and encouragement, helping reduce fear and anxiety.
  • Provide physical comfort measures such as massage, position changes, breathing techniques, and counter-pressure to support labor progress and reduce discomfort.
  • Share evidence-based information to help families make informed decisions throughout the birth experience.

Benefits of Doula Support

Research shows that having a doula present during labor can lead to:

  • Shorter labor times
  • Reduced need for medical interventions
  • Better pain management
  • Improved birth outcomes
  • Greater satisfaction with the overall birth experience

A doula’s goal is to empower, support, and advocate for families throughout their childbirth journey.

Outside the Doula Scope of Practice:

What Doulas Do Not Do

Because doulas are non-medical support professionals, they do not:

  • Replace a doctor, nurse, or midwife
  • Deliver babies
  • Provide medical advice or diagnoses
  • Prescribe or administer medications, supplements, or treatments
  • Perform medical procedures or clinical care
  • Encourage clients to go against medical recommendations
  • Make decisions for families or speak on their behalf

A Doula’s Role

A doula’s role is to provide emotional, physical, and informational support while helping families understand their options and confidently communicate their own preferences and decisions.

Doulas are non-medical professionals and therefore do not:
  • Replace a doctor or midwife
  • Deliver babies
  • Give medical advice
  • Diagnose medical conditions
  • Prescribe/administer herbal or over-the-counter medications
  • Perform clinical procedures or treatments of any kind
  • Advise families to act against medical advice
  • Although Doula’s are advocates for the birthing parent and their family, Doulas do not speak for the family.

About NCUS TEC's Community Based Doula Training Program

NCUS TEC is post-secondary career college approved by the Ohio Board of Career Colleges. Here we educate and train Doula's though our approved course recognized as a certificate program in the state of Ohio called the: Community Based Doula. Current students attend a rigorous 8 week program and are trained and tested on curriculum that not only covers physiological birth, and how to support their clients, but also hands on skills and positioning. These skills ensure that our Doula's know the optimal positions to support clients and facilitate baby getting into the best position for birth. The course educates students of the black maternal health crisis, alongside of what social determinants and risk factors birthing parents may be facing, and resources to help aid on that front.
